Berlin-based artist Verena Kyselka often works in collaboration with other artists, or even with amateurs. Her art projects have taken her to artist residencies in the Arab and Asian regions. There, she seeks for contacts and collaboration with artists and musicians. Furthermore, the camera and shared camera images often play a role in bridging language barriers as well as cultural differences. Kyselka seeks mutual connections via symbols, rituals and music as well. In a way, her approach is similar to the filmmaker Ulrike Ottinger. However, Kyselka works more openly, does not try to create a mythical narrative or fictional character, but she looks for connections by using personal exchange and connecting elements in everyday culture.
Everyday culture and questions of her personal environment are also themes in the artistic works created in Berlin. These are also often autobiographical works, some of which were created with the family in Erfurt.
The resulting artistic works can neither be properly assigned to the genre of documentary nor experimental film, they are very personal episodes that always try to create something that connects; connecting between private experiences and human encounters across cultures.
The program at Z-Bar includes films made in Berlin, Erfurt, Gera, San Francisco, Taipei, Kyrgyzstan and Bangalore.
