13 photographers, four months of preparation, one week in Istanbul. The result is an exhibition showing a city in constant change. Where today you see residential buildings, tomorrow there are skyscrapers and motorways. Examining Istanbul under the aspect of urbanisation is a challenge. It is one of the oldest cities of the world but at the same time one of the youngest metropolitan areas that only started to develop in the 1950s. At this time only around one million people lived in the city, today there are around 15 million. This rapid growth came with its own problems: property speculation, displacement, planning mistakes. This background informs an exhibition which reflects upon the contemporary city with an artistic eye and an awareness of its own point-of-view. The photo camera becomes a means of communication and an opportunity for creating publicity especially in the parts of the city that are directly affected by displacement and gentrification. In order to achieve that the participants had to develop their own strategies of visualisation to put forward an alternative to the ubiquitous media imaginary. One goal was to challenge the perspective on one's own city for the photographers as well as for the visitors of the exhibition. UrbanISTanbul continues a photography project that exists since 2012 as a collaboration of the Photocentrum at the Gilberto Bosques Volkshochschule Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and the twinning association Kadiköy e.V. The project established a artistic exchange at the highest standard, with participants from Berlin and Istanbul and several exhibition in both cities. The Berlin part is organised by the artist and photographer Klaus W. Eisenlohr, supported by the photographer Levent Karaoğlu in Istanbul. The exhibition will feature a contribution by photographers from Istanbul, organised by Levent Karaoğlu, with Dilek İlhan Güner, Özgül Küçük, Nilüfer Çetin, Nuh Koçak, Deniz Kizilkanat, Patrick Schilling and Levent Karaoğlu. Das Ergebnis ist eine Ausstellung, die eine Stadt zeigt, die im ständigen Umbruch ist. Wo heute noch Wohnhäuser stehen, wachsen morgen Wolkenkratzer und Autobahnen. Istanbul unter urbanen Aspekten zu betrachten, ist eine Herausforderung. Eine der ältesten Städte und zugleich eine der jüngsten Metropolen, deren rapides Wachstum erst um 1950 begonnen hat. Damals hatte die Stadt 1 Million Einwohner, heute sind es um die 15 Millionen. Dieses schnelle Wachstum bringt Probleme mit sich: Immobilienspekulation, Verdrängung, Planungslücken. Vor diesem Hintergrund entstand eine Ausstellung, die sich mit künstlerischer Absicht und reflektiertem Blick den modernen und jüngsten Stadtentwicklungen annähert. Die Kamera wird zum Mittel der Kommunikation und zu einer Möglichkeit, Öffentlichkeit herzustellen vor allem in den Stadtteilen, die direkt von Verdrängung und Gentrifizierung betroffen sind. Dafür bedurfte es der eigenen Bildstrategien, um der Macht der Medienbilder etwas eigenes entgegenzustellen. Ein Ziel war, durch bildhafte Aneignung den Blick auch auf die eigene Stadt zu verändern, sowohl für die Fotografen als auch für die Besucher der Ausstellung. UrbanISTanbul ist die Fortsetzung eines Fotografie-Projekts, das mit dem Photocentrum der Gilberto Bosques Volkshochschule Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg und dem Städtepartnerschaftsvereins Kadiköy e.V. seit 2012 besteht. Es ist ein künstlerischer Austausch auf hohem Niveau entstanden, mit Teilnehmern aus Berlin und Istanbul und mehreren Ausstellungen in beiden Städten. In Berlin betreut der Künstler und Fotograf Klaus W. Eisenlohr das Projekt, in Istanbul unterstützt vom Fotografen Levent Karaoğlu. Mit einem Gastbeitrag Istanbuler Fotografen, geleitet von Levent Karaoğlu. Mit Dilek İlhan Güner, Özgül Küçük, Nilüfer Çetin, Nuh Koçak, Deniz Kizilkanat, Patrick Schilling and Levent Karaoğlu.
