We set out to the city on the Bosporus in October 2012 for a week of photographic field research. Our goal was to explore a nearly forgotten urban modernity and to follow up on more recent developments of the city. </p> <p>The project took place in cooperation with the *City Partnership Association Kadžköy* and the *Photocentrum am Wasserturm*. We started out in Kadžköy, the former Bycantine city of Chalcedon, a cosmopolitan district with Turkish, Greek, Armenian und Jewish influences located on the Asian side of the Bosperus. It is the partner district of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg in Berlin where a substantial portion of the population is of Turkish descent and where the Photocentrum is located. </p> <p>The group prepared by reading up on current discourses on urban development in the metropolis of Istanbul and by looking at and discussing art works dealing with urbanization and gentrification. In Istanbul local participants opened up the communication channels between us and local population which gave us the chance to explore public spaces and get glimpses of everyday life in the city. The camera became a means of communication, a tool for creating awareness. By developing an individual visual language our view on our own city changed as a result. </p> <p>Leitung | Tutor: Klaus W.
