A car drives slowly through an old Detroit theatre building, now a car park. A rapid camera travels in close-up through architectural models creating surreal shots. A singing choir walks through a Helsinki landfill and construction site. Images of a postmodern villa never finished and in ruins in Israel. A staccato of images shows a bike ride through the streets of Helsinki and resonate with long shots of a Plaza in Montreal in another film. |

With their complementary expressions, these films correspond with each other. They have in common an extraordinary cinematic exploration of space. Spatial and architectural relations are being constructed through the filmic abilities of the camera, sequential framing and associative editing. Also, not trying to create a representation of reality, the makers are more concerned about perceptions of urban reality than her representation. |

The camera leaves the non-engaged point of view, the tripod. The documentary gaze does not satisfy the needs any more. The artist's observations shift to interaction, the documentarist gets her hands on the story of a village. And the film script is being formed by the reality of the protagonists (youngsters living in Tallinn). |

The work with team and camera 'on location' becomes the lab for social interaction. The resulting films, products of these processes become readable like a city, as the "story" is multi-layered between concept, response and feedback, and artist's vision. The viewer no more being overwhelmed by a load of "objective facts", steps out of the consumer position and regains her critical power over the film. |

Berlin, Lisbon, Sao Paulo, Long Island, Mexico City, Parisian Suburbs and the center of Praha are being depicted by traveling artists. These films do not pretend knowledge they do not have. The artists offer their view with a humble gesture that is aware of their state as 'non-resident aliens.' |

On travel, on the road, as artist-in-residence, artists increasingly become contemporary nomads. They work in foreign countries or cities, often sponsored by international programs or funds. As with the ordinary traveler, the tourist, the big cities are the main attractions of these travels. Equally to the short-term visits of tourists and journalists, the temporal conditions become important: The impossibility to penetrate the surface, the attractiveness of 'exotic' spectacles, the short time not allowing deep insights and long-term friendships. On the other hand, there is the first-term impression, a view independent from personal relations and freedom of responsibilities. |

The bronze lions in front of the well-known late neo-classicist museum building in Chicago could be the symbol for relations between humans and animals in cities. Where cityscapes have become second nature, we do not search for lost rural relations to nature, or landscapes of wilderness. The longing for animals and for open urban space still carries desires that act as a friction to urban realities and create utopian ideas in the sense of W. Benjamin. |

This program presents urban American reflections. Still, the iconography of the image of the United States is a legend in either good or bad. Until today, developments and 'reforms' in Europe are being introduced with statements like: "In America it has long been common practiceŠ", and it is understood that this already should be a satisfying argument. Thus, it is interesting to see films by filmmakers about the urban landscape that do not build a myth around the city. |
